About Us

JOin us on our journey

The Teragi families share similar stories about how they fell in love with Jiu Jitsu and decided to open an afterschool and Jiu Jitsu academy. Both families prioritize academic excellence and physical fitness as core values for improving their well-being and building a foundation for growth and success. They were fortunate to have strong academic support systems from a young age, which enabled them to successfully complete primary education and beyond. With degrees (including master’s degrees) from UC Berkeley, San Diego State, UCLA, US Air Force, National University, and USC, they have pursued fruitful careers in healthcare and information technology. Teragi Academy seeks to provide the same foundational academic support system to young members of the community through their afterschool program.

The importance of self-defense against bullies was a driving force in enrolling their children in Jiu Jitsu. However, they soon realized that their journeys would entail competing in tournaments and even participating in training themselves. As Jiu Jitsu practitioners, they have enjoyed immense benefits, including physical fitness, mental focus, and confidence. Their goal is for children and adults in their community to experience self-empowerment, growth, and success. They aim to foster a culture of academic excellence and demonstrate the benefits of physical education. Through Jiu Jitsu, students can develop self-confidence and overcome adversities. They are committed to building a stronger foundation for their children and families by connecting the community.

RAMOS STORY

The Ramos family initially sought to provide their children with the tools to defend themselves in challenging situations. Although their kids initially resisted attending Jiu Jitsu classes, they soon discovered that they enjoyed the structured play of training at a young age. They learned how to control their breathing in stressful situations and remain calm under pressure. Through sparring rounds, they gained valuable experience in managing intense emotions that arise during physical confrontations, learning how to bounce back from losses and be gracious winners.

Following their children's success in Jiu Jitsu, John and Donna decided to join them on the mats. John quickly developed a passion for the sport and has since been awarded his black belt in December 2019, followed by his first stripe in December 2022.

KIM STORY

Since 2012, the Kim family has been raising their children in Fullerton. Like many well-intentioned parents, they enrolled their kids in good schools, signed them up for afterschool programs, and encouraged them to participate in sports. After their children earned black belts in Tae Kwon Do, they became interested in the practical effectiveness of Jiu Jitsu and enrolled them at Gracie Barra, where they trained for over five years.

Through their Jiu Jitsu training, the Kim children grew strong, confident, kind, and compassionate. They have emerged as leaders and inspirations to other students, both in Jiu Jitsu and high school wrestling. While the parents may have been busy building careers and forging a livelihood, the afterschool education and martial arts activities helped keep their children on the right path.
